Nourishing Young Minds for a Wholesome Future
Imagine a situation where every bat swing helps satiate a child’s hunger. This vision becomes a reality when players from around the world unite at Sai Krishnan Cricket Stadium, Muddenahalli to play for a cause greater than the game itself. The One World One Family Cup, launched in 2024 by Sri Madhusudan Sai, is a pioneering event that combines the spirit of cricket with the compassion of Sri Madhusudan Sai Global Humanitarian Mission to combat hidden hunger, illiteracy, and poor health among children in rural India.
Among the many life-changing initiatives it highlights, the ground-breaking nutrition programme—led by the Annapoorna Trust— is turning the tide against hidden hunger and nourishing young minds for a healthier, more equitable tomorrow.
But what does hidden hunger mean? It is a condition caused by deficiency of micronutrients that severely affects a child’s physical and cognitive development. Unfortunately, many school-going children in India start their day on an empty stomach, which not only dwindles their focus in class but also holds them back from learning and growing.
The Annapoorna Trust is working tirelessly to change this narrative so that every child begins their day with the nourishment they deserve. Furthermore, through the powerful platform of OWOF Cup, the trust is working head-on to combat hunger on a global level. For instance, their Annapoorna MorningNutrition programme, which began with offering well-balanced cooked meals, has evolved into a scalable innovative solution to include a fortified drink. This nutrient-rich drink, power-packed with essential vitamins and minerals, is easy to prepare, and, more importantly, raises nutritional awareness among cooks, thereby encouraging them to prioritise nutritional value in every meal they serve.
SaiSure: The Powerhouse of Nutrition
At the core of this initiative lies SaiSure, a micronutrient-rich health mix designed to significantly improve the overall well-being of children. This millet- or malt-based mix is fortified with:
- Minerals: Sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc, iodine, selenium, and copper.
- Vitamins: From vitamin A to an extensive range of B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6, B7, B9, B12) and vitamin C.
SaiSure is scientifically formulated to deliver 50%of a child’s Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) that help boost everything from bone health to immune resilience, offering noteworthy outcomes. After its daily consumption, children have become healthier, more focused, and better equipped to learn, grow, and realise their full potential.
Expanding Reach: A Nationwide Impact
Today, Annapoorna Morning Nutrition programme nourishes over 10 million school children on school days across 143,000 Schools (25 states and 4 Union Territories) in India and schools overseas. These children hail from the rural areas of the country that largely remain underserved, where even a single nutritious meal is often beyond reach. By providing a nourishing start to their day, the programme witnessed:
• 90% Improvement in school attendance
• 20-45% Improvement in height and weight
• Improved cognitive development, enabling children perform better academically
• Reduced child mortality rates caused by malnutrition
• A ripple effect of positive change, promoting a cycle of education and empowerment.
Cricket and Nutrition: A Winning Partnership
The OWOF Cup is a testament to how sport can serve as a powerful catalyst for change. By combining cricket with the global humanitarian mission, the event amplifies the reach of the nutrition programme to alleviate hidden hunger. It serves as a doorway to knit players, fans, and stakeholders from both countries in a shared goal: to create a healthier, more equitable future for generations to come.
